A New Season, A New Day, A New Opportunity!

My football club, Arsenal won their 14th topflight title only three months ago and after a summer full of soccer, due to the World Cup, it's hard to believe that another season has arrived.  On Sunday, the Gunners will contest Manchester City for the Community Shield, the "kickoff classic" of English football pitting the reigning Premier League champions against the FA Cup holders.  We will then take on the newly promoted Coventry City who won the English Championship (the second division in English professional football) and who gained promotion to the Premier League.  I wonder how often the reigning Premier League champs have faced off against the Championship title holders in the first match of a new Premier League season?  According to Google's AI, this will be only the second time for this to occur.  It seems Liverpool faced Leeds United to start the 2020 season, the only other time this has happened.

Will Arsenal win the 2026/2027 Premier League?  Will we win different and additional trophies (Champions League, FA Cup, EFL Cup)?  Will we win all four?  That would be a first for any English club.  Obviously, not knowing the answer to these questions is one of the reasons we fanatics keep watching the matches.  But, with a new season dawning just a few months after the previous season's ending, it raises a couple of questions.  What's the point of winning a trophy, if you are going to have to go back and do it all over again? Does last season's title mean anything once this new season kicks off?  I think the answer to both of these questions stems from the fact that humans constantly need to set and reset goals.  When we reach those goals, we have reason to celebrate, but we must not be content to simply rest on our laurels.  No matter what we may have achieved in life and no matter how often or spectacularly we have failed to achieve our goals, life affords us with new opportunities to get up off our backs and go for it again!

So, if you have recently met an expectation or realized a dream, don't forget to keep dreaming.  Equally, if you've failed to be all that you can be, your story isn't over.  Just as each new sports season affords a team the opportunity to give it another go, each new day gives us all another chance to become all that we were created to be.  May you move closer to your goals and dreams this day, and all the days to come! - Shay
